How to Vacuum a Flat-Weave Wool Rug

American Indian weaves, Mexican Zapotecs, and Persian kilims are not “easier” because they’re thin. They’re more exposed. There is little pile to sacrifice before you see wear.

Dry soil scratches fiber the way sandpaper scratches skin. Vacuum when you dust the tables—light soil, often—not after the rug looks gray.

The right motion

  • Canister vacuum, beater bar off. Never an aggressive upright.
  • Work side to side (across the width), not just along the length.
  • A hand upholstery tool works; it’s slow. An electric sweeper (Bissell, Shark class) is a decent dust-picker if the brush is gentle.
  • Very soft wool: too much suction fuzzes the face. Use a soft brush and light strokes.

Wall hangings still collect airborne soil. A soft brush on the face, periodically, is enough between professional cleanings. Average interval remains every 1–3 years depending on how the house lives. Don’t wait until wear is obvious; obvious means the damage already happened.

When you are ready for a real reset, start with rug cleaning.
