Silk and velvet make a room. They also show water rings, crushed pile, and dye loss faster than a workhorse polyester. Finding someone who will slow down is the whole job.
What we need to know
- The cleaning code tagged under a cushion.
- Whether color comes off on a white cloth (crocking).
- Whether the pile is crushed from a window-side nap or from a previous steam.
Steam extractors rented for carpet are too wet and too crude for silk. Velvet often needs a nap set as it dries—not a vigorous brush. Some silks are solvent-only. We would rather decline a full wet clean than leave you with tide marks. Ask for a test corner on a hidden welt before anyone commits the whole sofa.
