Smoke Odor in Carpet and Upholstery

Cigarette, wildfire, or a fireplace that back-drafted: smoke sticks as a film on carpet, pad, curtains, and the sofa. A deodorizing fog covers it until the next warm day.

What actually moves the odor

  • Dry soil removal so you’re not washing ash into the backing.
  • Hot water extraction with chemistry that releases the film—not a perfume.
  • Upholstery in the same room. Cleaning only the floor leaves a reservoir.
  • Honest talk about the pad. Some smoke-damaged pads need to be replaced.

Activated charcoal and other odor absorbers can help on furniture we can’t fully wet. They are not a substitute for washing what can be washed. If the house still smells after textiles are clean, the HVAC and walls are next—not a second spray on the carpet.

When you are ready for a real reset, start with carpet cleaning.
