Sap sounds simple: hit it with a solvent and watch it dissolve. Solvent also attacks wool, silk, and the latex glue that holds a tufted rug together. A “small sticky spot” can become a bald patch or a delaminating back.
If the blob is tiny and you’re careful
Pre-test in a hidden spot. Put a drop of solvent on a Q-tip, touch only the sap, and immediately rinse with a mild mix: 1 tablespoon colorless dish soap in 2 cups tepid water. Fingertips, outer edge inward. Clear-water rinse. Blot dry with white towels. Stop the moment color moves or fibers feel gummy.
If it is more than a dot
Bring it in. We can isolate the resin without soaking the foundation. Tufted rugs especially should not get a solvent bath at home. Holiday trees, firewood, and kids’ pinecone crafts are the usual sources in this altitude. Scrape gently only after the sap is brittle—never while it’s tacky.
