What we found under the furniture
The worst damage sat under the sofa, the desk, and along the wall—exactly where air couldn’t move. The rug had stayed wet long enough for mold and dry rot. A large piece covering most of a small room is the highest risk: more furniture, more trapped moisture, more hassle to move, so people wait.
Left wet, rugs don’t just smell musty. Dyes can bleed. Foundation fibers rot. Tufted rugs can delaminate. We only saw the full loss when the piece came off the floor. The owner went through insurance; we helped with appraisal notes and a repair-versus-replace conversation.
Do this the day the water happens
- Lift furniture off the rug. Don’t wait for the restoration crew’s second visit.
- Get the rug off the wet pad and the wet floor.
- Call a rug plant that works with water-loss companies—not a carpet wand in the living room.
Rugs hold money and memory. Ignoring them after a leak is how a salvageable wash becomes a replacement claim.
