Garage carpet was never designed for an oil change. We still see a lot of it: a drip pan that overflowed, a filter that dribbled, a cardboard square that wasn’t enough.
What we do
- Identify that it’s petroleum, not food grease.
- Pretreat with a solvent-side spotter that won’t wreck the fiber.
- Hot water extraction to move the loosened oil out.
- Check for wicking from the pad. Oil in the pad comes back as a ghost.
A “portable oil kit” is a holding action. If the stain is larger than a credit card or already brown-black through the back, skip the hardware-store experiment. We use low-residue chemistry so the garage doesn’t stay tacky. If you want a protector after, that’s optional and only after the oil is actually gone.
Better long-term: a real drain pan and a walk-off mat at the house door so the next drip doesn’t tour the hallway.
When you are ready for a real reset, start with carpet cleaning.
