People buy pads for the plush feel. That’s the least important reason. A hygienist says floss the teeth you want to keep. We say pad the rugs you want to last.
Shock absorbers for knots
Foot traffic compresses pile and foundation. A quality pad spreads that load the way shocks spare a car on a washboard road. Delicate face fiber shows wear first; pad slows that. Hand-knotted rugs especially need it—the knots are the whole structure.
Safety and stay-put
Pad grips. A wandering rug is a trip. Flat weaves (we like a NoMuv-style cushion over hard floors or over wall-to-wall) stay put instead of accordion-folding in a hallway.
Cheap waffle pads that crumble into yellow dust are worse than nothing: they stain floors and dump grit into the back of the rug. If you’re unsure what you have, bring a scrap or a photo. We sell pad we trust and will tell you if what you already own is doing harm.
