Vacuuming Area Rugs Without Eating the Fringe

Dry soil rides in on shoes and paws. Left in the pile it is sandpaper. These rules apply to wool, synthetic, and most flat weaves.

Four habits

  1. Weekly, at least. Active houses may need more. You want soil out before it reaches the base.
  2. Skip fringe and sidecords. Vacuums eat them. We repair more vacuum-chewed fringe than pet-chewed fringe.
  3. No beater bar on delicate pile. Upright brushes are too aggressive for wool and silk; synthetics don’t love them either. Turn the brush off, raise it all the way, or—better—use a canister with suction only.
  4. Still wash the rug every 1–3 years. Vacuuming is maintenance. It is not a plant wash. Soil you cannot see is still cutting fiber.

If you only remember one thing: suction the field, protect the fringe, and don’t beat the rug.

When you are ready for a real reset, start with rug cleaning.
