Live plants are lovely. Overwatering them onto a rug is one of the nastier accidents we see. You get a stain from soil minerals and a real shot at dry rot in the cotton foundation—the brown, crumbly decay that precedes holes.
Prevention that actually works
- A waterproof saucer or cachepot under every pot that sits on or near a rug.
- Check those saucers. Cracks leak slowly. Slow leaks rot.
- Tell the spouse, the sitter, and the cleaning service: do not “be generous” with the watering can.
The water is bad. The minerals in potting soil are worse. White or rust-colored rings at the edge of a pot are often permanent. If you already have a tide mark, don’t scrub it with bathroom lime remover. Get the rug off the wet pad, dry the floor, and let us see the fiber before anyone “treats” it.
