Fringe Repair: What to Do and What Never to Do

Some people love fringe. Some people hate how fast it soils. Either way, it is part of the rug’s construction, not a decorative afterthought you can shear off.

Pets chew it. Cats bat it into knots. We still see more fringe killed by vacuums than by dogs. Tell whoever cleans the house: the wand does not go over the tassels. That is not a preference. It is how you keep the rug from unraveling.

Do

  • Comb fringe with a plastic-tooth rug groomer so it lies straight.
  • Have loose or missing ends repaired as soon as you notice them. Unsecured warp travels.
  • Ask for an inspection and a firm repair quote before anyone “just trims it even.”

Don’t

  • Don’t cut fringe off because it’s dingy. Dingy is soil. Cutting is structural damage.
  • Don’t dye it with fabric dye at home.
  • Don’t glue it to the floor.

We inspect, quote, and repair. Waiting until the end is a fringe of bare warp is how a modest job becomes a reweave.

When you are ready for a real reset, start with rug cleaning.
