Why We Don’t Wash Fine Rugs in Your Living Room

We don’t recommend washing area rugs in the home. That’s not a sales line. You cannot control the variables that ruin wool and silk: dye bleed, shrinkage, musty dry, and urine that never leaves the knots.

A wall-to-wall carpet cleaner’s wand is built for glued-down broadloom. Loose rugs are a different object. Affordable machine-mades can still bleed, shrink, and stink if they’re over-wet and under-dried. Orientals and Persians more so.

Problems you can’t fix on a living-room floor

  • Color migration into a white border
  • A tufted back letting go
  • A pad that stays wet and molds
  • Urine crystals you cannot flush without immersing and extracting properly

You wouldn’t ask a colorist to foil your hair in the driveway with a garden hose. Same idea. Pickup exists so the rug can go where the work is possible.

When you are ready for a real reset, start with rug cleaning.
