Ink on Upholstery and Leather

Ink is designed to stay put. That is a virtue on paper and a problem on a cream sofa. Ballpoint, gel, and marker are not the same stain. Leather and a woven fabric are not the same substrate.

Do not start with alcohol on leather

A splash of rubbing alcohol can lift ink. It can also strip the finish and leave a dull map. On aniline leather, that map is permanent. Hair-spray folklore is worse: perfume, alcohol, and resin in the grain.

What we do

We identify the ink, the fiber, and whether color crocks onto a white cloth. Then a controlled solvent on fabric, or a leather-safe sequence that does not chew the topcoat. Some marks reduce; some only lighten. We will say which before we work a visible arm. If the piece is worth it, upholstery cleaning plus a limited ink treatment beats a throw pillow as camouflage.
