Grout that has been dingy since harvest-gold appliances were in style is not a lost cause. It is porous ceramic cement that has been storing grease, soil, and soap. It also stores bacteria. Cleaning it is a hygiene job, not a cosmetic hobby.
Why a spray bottle stalls out
Household “grout pens” and bleach splash hide color. They don’t extract what’s in the pore. Bleach can also lighten grout unevenly and chew at nearby stone or colored caulk.
We use truck-mounted hot water extraction: chemistry to loosen the film, heat and pressure to move it, immediate extraction so you’re not left with a muddy slurry in the line. Kitchens and baths get different dwell and agitation because grease and soap scum are not the same soil.
Then, maybe, sealer
Sealing dirty grout locks the dirt in. We clean first, let it dry, then seal if the grout is a candidate. Some very old, crumbling grout needs repair, not another product. We’ll say if the line is too far gone.
When you are ready for a real reset, start with tile and grout cleaning.
