Silk is shiny, fine, and expensive. It lets weavers put extraordinary detail into a rug—knot counts can reach the high hundreds per square inch. People who own that quality usually know what they paid.
Count knots on the back
Lay a ruler on the reverse. Count knots in one inch left to right, then rows in one inch top to bottom. Multiply. Ninety by ten is 900 knots per square inch. Counting will be miserable because the knots are tiny—that’s the point. Other fibers rarely pack that fine.
Shine is not a lab test
Mills copy the look with mercerized cotton (“art silk”) and viscose. They catch light. They also bruise, water-spot, and shed in ways real silk doesn’t. A fine silk rug from a serious gallery costs many thousands. A bargain “silk” from a mall pile is almost never the real fiber.
If you need a real answer, we can look at fiber, knot, and handle in person. Don’t burn a fringe at home to “test silk.” You can ruin the end of a rug and still misread the flame.
