We’ve offered preventative moth treatment on freshly washed rugs for decades. A few owners wave it off: they don’t think Northern Arizona has a moth problem. Then we meet the owner of an eight-thousand-dollar Persian that is a constellation of holes.
Larvae, not moths, do the eating
The flying insect is the delivery system. She looks for a dark, undisturbed nest, lays eggs, and leaves. The hatchlings eat wool. High-traffic family rooms, hallways, and kitchens are usually safe—no respectable moth parks her young under a vacuum and a dog. Guest rooms, closets, storage sheds, and the back of a wool wall hanging are the gold mine.
Dirty storage makes it worse
Soil, crumbs, and old urine are extra protein. If you plan to store a rug, wash it first. After the wash we can apply an invisible WoolSafe protectant that does not change the hand of the wool. Combine that with a breathable wrap and you have a fighting chance.
Repair is possible—sometimes
Once larvae have cut the pile or the foundation, you’re in restoration territory: reweaving, patching, or stopping further loss. We inspect, photograph, and quote before we touch a needle. Prevention is cheaper than any of those options.
