Store Rugs Clean—or Don’t Store Them

Clean is better. Always. A soiled rug does not go dormant in a closet. Organic spots—food, urine—sit at a higher pH than wool and silk. The longer they sit, the more fiber they burn. Urine salts keep the foundation damp enough to dry-rot. You can roll a rug up and unroll holes a few years later.

Old spots also get harder to remove. And they invite moths, carpet beetles, and rodents because of the protein.

How we store-prep

  • Full wash, including a urine flush if the history even hints at pets.
  • WoolSafe moth treatment on wool and silk.
  • Breathable wrap. Never long-term plastic.
  • A dry, not-too-hot place—not the shed roof in July.

If the rug already smells like a garage, that’s moisture and soil talking. Don’t add a tarp and hope.

When you are ready for a real reset, start with rug cleaning.
