Motor Oil on Garage Carpet

Garage carpet was never designed for an oil change. We still see a lot of it: a drip pan that overflowed, a filter that dribbled, a cardboard square that wasn’t enough.

What we do

  1. Identify that it’s petroleum, not food grease.
  2. Pretreat with a solvent-side spotter that won’t wreck the fiber.
  3. Hot water extraction to move the loosened oil out.
  4. Check for wicking from the pad. Oil in the pad comes back as a ghost.

A “portable oil kit” is a holding action. If the stain is larger than a credit card or already brown-black through the back, skip the hardware-store experiment. We use low-residue chemistry so the garage doesn’t stay tacky. If you want a protector after, that’s optional and only after the oil is actually gone.

Better long-term: a real drain pan and a walk-off mat at the house door so the next drip doesn’t tour the hallway.

When you are ready for a real reset, start with carpet cleaning.
