A used rug at a good price is fun until you get it home. These are the failures we see after the handshake.
- Odor. Smoke takes aggressive deodorizing and still may linger. Urine needs a full flush, not a spray.
- Bugs. Wool or silk stored in a garage or under a bed is moth territory. Bed bugs and carpet beetles travel too. Infestations get treated before we wash.
- Tufted latex. Many tufted rugs last about a decade before the glue powders out and prints the floor. Backing that is shedding or peeling is a replacement, not a bargain.
- Dry rot and sun rot. Fold the corner gently. A crackle is a warning.
- Pet chew and vacuum fringe. Price the repair before you congratulate yourself.
Ask where it lived. Ask whether pets lived there. If the seller is vague, budget a plant inspection. We would rather tell you “walk away” than wash a biohazard you didn’t mean to buy.
